Our Math Strengthener programs are like a workout for your brain! While each program targets different specific areas, they are all designed to build student proficiency, competency, and confidence in various important mathematical skills. Throughout the week students will solve problems, play math games, work independently and in groups, and learn to think and communicate about their strategies.

In our 10-11 Booster program, students will get to refresh their skills in concepts related to quadratic relations and trigonometry. There will be particular focus on understanding and mastering key concepts that students will be expected to use confidently in future math courses. Topics include:

  • Factoring and solving quadratic equations
  • Solving systems of equations (linear and linear-quadratic)
  • Understanding trigonometric ratios
  • Solving problems with trigonometry
  • Transformations of functions and graphing

In our Problem Solving weeks, participants will learn strategies for solving common math problems, as well as strategies for tackling unfamiliar and complex problems using familiar concepts. They'll learn how to write elegant solutions and communicate about their methods. They'll also learn how to transfer their skills to solving problems in other classes, as well as outside of school altogether.

In our High School Fundamentals program, students approaching, or already in, high school will get to sharpen and strengthen important skills that they'll need throughout the remainder of their math careers. This program has been developed with the insight of high school math teachers who see students make the same common mistakes year after year but the idea that summer camp shouldn't feel like school! Topics include:

  • Isolating variables properly
  • Using order of operations in complex problems
  • Working with fractions
  • Building proficiency in spotting mistakes and checking your work

Ready to think, solve, and create?

Then join us this summer!  Throughout Eco-Cities summer camp, students will work towards designing different components of an eco-friendly, urban neighbourhood. Each day they'll participate in hands-on challenges that will see them building their skills in creative thinking, problem solving, and teamwork. By the end of the program each challenge will come together to create a sustainable neighbourhood that can support a healthy community and planet. Your child might even bring home a few ideas for how to create positive change in your neighbourhood right away.

Key topics include:

  • The design cycle and the importance of iteration
  • How to design with equity and sustainability in mind
  • Considering the needs of, and working with, stakeholders
  • Enabling plants, animals, and humans to coexist and thrive in the same spaces
  • What your design process can say about you!

Sample activities:

  • Design a public transit system for a growing community
  • Design and build a playground or public park with accessibility in mind
  • Energy efficient building design challenge
  • Create a prototypes for bridges or through ways that allow humans and animals to share roadways

The Details

Eco-Cities will be taking place at Dragon Academy from July 13-17, 2020.

Camp activities will take place from 9 am to 4 pm with a lunch break at noon and snack breaks throughout the day.

Before and after care is available for all students from 8 am to 5 pm for an additional $115/week.

This program is open to students currently in grades 4-8.

Intro to Geospatial Analysis

This week campers will not only learn more about the world around them, but also get an introduction to the ways in which we represent our world. Throughout the program, campers will get a chance to explore the applications of geography beyond the confines of school curriculum. They will be introduced to foundational geospatial concepts that build upon their existing knowledge, while also drawing connections to the rapidly growing field of Geospatial Analysis.

Key topics and themes include:

  • Building and applying skills in spatial sense
  • The importance of considering different perspectives
  • Introducing rudimentary land surveying and sampling principles
  • Considering land use and human factors as they apply to urban design

Sample activities:

  • Creating 3D landscape models from 2D topographic maps
  • Designing improvements to transit systems with various human and environmental factors in mind
  • Sampling in the community around us and using various technologies to display data
  • Use interactive maps to analyse and make meaningful connections between people, land, and data

The Details

Intro to Geospatial Analysis will take place at Dragon Academy from July 27 to 31, 2020.

Camp activities will take place from 9 am to 4 pm with a lunch break at noon and snack breaks throughout the day.
